The golden rule with references: if you don’t have anything good to say about the candidate, don’t say anything at all!
Even with disclaimers like those contained in these template letters, you may be held liable for anything that is defamatory, inaccurate or negligent.
For this reason, many speech pathologists do not give references as a policy. Unfortunately, many employers require references to employ a new staff member. A sensible, lower risk middle ground may be to provide a “statement of service”, as in the third template included in this pack.
