Senior SLPs: double-down on your strengths to avoid burn out

The big picture:

Too many senior SLPs in private practice get stuck offering too many types of services for too many populations of clients. This ignores the theory of comparative advantage, lowers overall service quality, and contributes to burnout.

Zoom in:

As you progress into leadership positions, choose opportunities that allow you to dedicate time and energy to the things you are exceptional at; things that no-one else can do – or would want to do – as well as you. Seek to:

  • chase work for which you have a strong comparative advantage;
  • minimise work in which you lack a natural advantage;
  • consciously team up with others who have complementary skills (to offset relative disadvantages);
  • delegate tasks when others can do them to the same or better standard; and
  • carve out time to hone skills in areas where you possess a natural advantage.

Bottom line:

Talented senior SLPs will always be overwhelmed with potential work. Use the principle of comparative advantage to filter opportunities. Focus on your strengths to deliver the best outcomes – for you and for your clients.
