Treating intelligent, talkative or rambunctious children with the Lidcombe Program for childhood stuttering can be tricky. On the one hand, you need the child to pay attention and, often, to talk less to stay fluent during practice sessions. On the other hand, you want the child to enjoy their practice sessions to maximise treatment gains and to make it easier on the family member doing the treatment at home.
To help us get the balance right, we’ve developed a simple one-page template poster setting out in pictures the ground-rules for each practice session. We’ve called it: “[Child’s first name]’s Smooth Talking Rules”.
Before starting each smooth talking session, we review the “Rules” together, making sure the child understands and agrees with them before we start (the more enjoyable activities). As soon as we finish the session, we put the activities away and take the poster down, signalling to the child that the session is over and that the rules no longer apply. For most pre-schoolers and younger school-aged children, we suggest no more than three rules, although the template is fully editable allowing you to add more if necessary.
