Speech pathology homework can be boring and demotivating – especially if it’s just a bunch of commercial worksheets and the client and family don’t know what they are working on or why.
As we’ve argued elsewhere, homework doesn’t need to be dull. But sometimes it’s hard to find the time to create personalised homework plans – especially when you’re managing a busy case load.
This home practice sheet/homework summary is designed to alleviate some of the hassle of preparing and explaining homework to save you time. It:
(a) gives you a structured way to plan, assign and explain homework to clients;
(b) links the homework back to the client’s basic goals identified at assessment;
(c) allows you to reference materials (such as worksheets) as well as assign personalised “real world” communication tasks;
(d) gives you a record of the homework so you don’t need to photocopy worksheets and other materials for the file; and
(e) gives your clients a place to record their home practice and to give you feedback.
You can insert your logo into the customisable template to make your “homework pack” look more professional and well-planned. You can fill it out electronically or by hand, before or during the session. The resource is made available in PDF and Word versions.
Another (unintended) benefit we’ve enjoyed using this template is the reminder it gives us about specific session goals for the current and next sessions – a big help on those very busy days in the clinic!
